May's programme

This month’s speakers come from Uganda and Nepal – two countries at very different extremes of the Christian world. In Uganda professing a Christian faith is an open and joyful business. It was therefore amidst much public ceremony and celebration that in January this year the Rev Dr Zac Niringiye who has been CMS Regional Director for Africa for the past four years, was consecrated in All Saints Cathedral as Assistant Bishop of Kampala diocese.

Zac is overjoyed to be taking up a new mission in the country of his birth. He sees the new appointment as the logical extension of his work with CMS, where he was very attracted by the Everywhere to Everywhere ideal. ‘I want to be part of an African missionary movement “from everywhere to everywhere”’ he says.

In contrast to Uganda, in Nepal it’s a far more difficult matter to be a Christian. But despite all the problems, Watkins was struck by the dynamism and energy of the young people he met, in a country which is now considered to have the fastest growing national church in the world. ‘The churches are just full of young people’ says Watkins.

‘It would be tempting to analyse this and try to find some technique [to account for this success] but I think the ultimate answer has to be that it is the movement of God’s spirit. And it is an indigenous movement. People have come to Christianity and then they have told their friends, their neighbours about Christ.’

Watkins was in Nepal to finalise arrangements for the Second Conference for South Asian Christian youth, to be held in Bangalore in June. This meeting, which is sponsored by CMS, together with the Methodist Church and USPG, will bring young Nepalese Christians together with others from around the region, for discussions around the theme of globalisation. The conference is set to provide a much-needed opportunity for a gathering, in a region where travel can be very difficult, not least because of serious civil unrest.
