The CMS Addiction Pack

CMS Addiction Study Pack

As part of the ‘Setting Captives Free’ campaign, CMS has produced a major study pack to enable Christians to examine the subject of addiction.

Using the Bible, prayer and reflection in a group context, it seeks to encourage local mission by inspiring your church to engage with addiction ministry, whether by just becoming aware of the issues or going as far as partnership with a rehabilitation service.

The pack is based around three years of pioneering research carried out by CMS mission partner Alison Giblett.

In addition to working in the former Soviet Union with a network of 20 rehabilitation centres run by the CMS-partner network Izhod (which means ‘Exodus’), she has visited 30 others and interviewed leading anti-addiction workers across the world.

Her insights and experiences form the core of the pack.  Of crucial importance are the perspectives of the recovering addicts and Christian rehabilitation leaders which she has gathered and presented here in first-person quotes.

The pack comprises six study units:
1. What is addiction?
2. What does an addict go through?
3. Freedom in Christ
4. Why Christian rehab?
5. Tackling addiction globally: Pakistan
6. Tackling addiction as a community: Manchester

Plus...
•  Worship ideas
•  The CMS map of addiction
•  Living a non-addictive lifestyle
•  Youth discussion starter
•  Mission focus: True freedom from addiction
•  Contacts sheet
•  A ‘giving’ form
•  A Direct Debit form

Each unit is designed to be studied by a group of 12 people or less in sessions each lasting up to an hour and 15 minutes.

Each one features: an introduction which sets the scene; learning points — facts, ideas or pieces of research on which to reflect or hold a group talk; Scripture readings for study; authentic accounts from either rehab leaders or recovering addicts.

Some units also have supplementary material for further information or use in wider church discussions.

The units have been designed in ‘bite-size’ chunks so that you don’t have to cover all the points, or carry out all the exercises.   You may find that the group wishes to discuss a single learning point at some length, or skip over others.

The CMS Study Pack on Addictions, priced only £10, is available NOW from the CMS shop at http://www.cms-shop.org.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/CMS/CMS0001/82038, or by phoning 020 7803 3376 to place an order.
