Jean
Weir is a CMS mission partner and has been working
in Nepal for three years in an international school. |
Jean Weir on living and loving for God in Nepal:
‘The people here have time for each other. They do not have a particular
word for a caring person, they use three instead. When translated it means
“a seeing, thinking, doing person”.
Jean has been teaching in an international school in Kathmandu, during
a period when the country has been rocked by Maoist uprisings and the
massacre of the Royal family.
‘It has been a most fulfilling time. For a long time I have wanted to
work in mission in the developing world and somehow promote God’s ways
and his desire for more justice. Education is a key issue families face
when thinking of working overseas. I have been glad to help make it possible
for families to come and serve in Nepal.
‘Some things I cannot get used to: How I in the UK could earn in one day
what most people here can’t earn in a month; people struggling a lot of
the time to get water from taps and wells, mostly which isn’t safe for
drinking; people I know who can’t afford even minor operations, which
they need.
‘My experience is that life does not usually work out the way I imagine,
and I have become more flexible and adaptable out of necessity. I have
learnt that I don’t need so much materially….
‘I have developed a heart for this place.’
